Prop Firm Data Fees Explained: Who Pays for CME Market Data in 2026

October 13, 2026•PropFirmsRadar Team•7 min read

Prop firm data fees are the cost line most futures traders discover after checkout. The challenge price is on the sales page; the market data agreement, the depth-of-market add-on and the professional data bill on a live account are not. This guide explains what CME actually charges in 2026, who pays it at each stage of a prop firm account, and which monthly platform fees sit on top - with the numbers taken from CME Group's published fee list and the firms' own help pages, not from forum estimates.

Short answer: on evaluation and simulated funded accounts, most futures prop firms cover Level 1 CME data, so you pay nothing extra as long as you sign the non-professional agreement. Level 2 (depth of market) is usually a paid add-on of roughly $36-$38 a month. The large bill arrives only on a live funded account, where you may be classed as professional at $134.50 per exchange per month - and at Topstep that fee is the trader's.

What a Prop Firm Data Fee Actually Is

Three different charges get called a data fee, and mixing them up is how traders over- or under-budget. The first is the exchange fee: CME Group charges for real-time prices from each of its four exchanges - CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX - whether you trade a funded account or your own money. The second is what the data distributor adds on top, since Tradovate, Rithmic and retail brokers can price above CME's reference rate. The third is the platform: a charting or execution licence such as NinjaTrader, TradingView or Sierra Chart, which has nothing to do with the exchange but is billed monthly just the same.

Data tierPer exchangeAll four exchanges
Non-professional Level 1 (top of book)$1.55$4.65 bundle
Non-professional Level 2 (depth of market)$12.10$36.50 bundle
Professional real-time (per display device)$134.50$538 if billed per exchange

Two details matter more than the headline numbers. First, exchange data is billed by calendar month and is not pro-rated: switch Level 2 on for one day and you pay the whole month - Topstep's help centre states this directly for its own add-on. Second, these are CME's reference rates, not the price on every statement. A retail broker such as AMP Futures lists $17 a month for a single exchange's depth data against CME's $12.10, so the rate a prop firm passes through can be higher than the table.

Who Pays Data Fees at a Prop Firm?

The answer changes with the account stage, not just the firm. During the evaluation and on a simulated funded account, the firm almost always covers Level 1 data inside the price you paid - Topstep, for example, covers top-of-book data for all four exchanges on Trading Combine and Express Funded Accounts. Depth of market is where the trader starts paying, as an optional monthly add-on. On a live funded account trading real capital, professional classification and its fee become possible, and whether the firm absorbs it is a policy decision that varies widely.

Professional vs. Non-Professional: The Box That Sets Your Bill

Every Tradovate or Rithmic login starts with a market data agreement asking you to declare yourself professional or non-professional, and neither platform decides for you. Under CME's definition you are non-professional if you are an individual who is not registered with the SEC, CFTC or a securities regulator, not acting as an investment adviser, and not using the data to manage money for a business. Most evaluation traders fit that description. Do not tick professional to be cautious: Tradeify warns that an unsigned agreement can bring a professional data charge of about $300 a month on its Tradovate accounts, and Rithmic's professional status is charged per calendar month with no refund once chosen.

Equally, do not tick non-professional to save money if it is not true. Holding a financial licence or working for a trading firm makes you professional, whatever the account size. The honest declaration is the cheapest one in the long run, because a misclassification found later is billed back.

Monthly Platform Fees for Futures Traders

  • NinjaTrader: on version 8.1 and later, most prop firm accounts connect with the credentials the firm issues and need no licence key. A paid licence is only needed for premium features; BluSky covers a full lifetime licence.
  • TradingView: a free account shows roughly five-second delayed data, according to Tradeify's pricing reference. Paid plans start at $12.95 a month, paid to TradingView, not the firm.
  • Tradovate: the web, desktop and mobile apps are free on prop accounts; Level 2 and EUREX data are paid add-ons billed by Tradovate.
  • Subscription evaluations: Topstep, TradeDay and Take Profit Trader bill the evaluation monthly, so a slow pass repeats the fee - the biggest monthly platform cost most futures traders pay.

What Data Fees Add to the Real Cost of a Challenge

Run the numbers for a trader who wants depth of market. At Topstep, a Combine from $49 a month plus the $38 Level 2 add-on comes to $87 a month, so a two-month pass costs $174 before any reset. At Tradeify, a $50,000 evaluation is about $107 one-time with code OCT and Level 1 is free once the agreement is signed; Level 2 adds Tradovate's monthly fee only for the months you keep it switched on. If you only trade from the chart, Level 1 is enough and the data fee at either firm is zero.

Before you buy a futures challenge

Find the firm's market data page and note what is included on the evaluation, the funded account and the live account.
Decide whether you genuinely need Level 2 - order-flow and DOM scalpers do, chart traders usually do not.
Sign the non-professional agreement on your first login, and only if it is true.
Switch paid add-ons off before the month rolls over - exchange data is never pro-rated.
Add any monthly evaluation fee and platform subscription to the challenge price before comparing firms.

Prop Firm Data Fees: FAQ

Do prop firms charge for market data?

Most futures prop firms include Level 1 CME data on evaluation and simulated funded accounts. Level 2 is typically a paid monthly add-on, and live accounts may carry professional data fees, which some firms pass to the trader.

How much are CME market data fees for a prop firm trader?

CME's 2026 reference rates are $1.55 per exchange for non-professional Level 1, $12.10 per exchange for non-professional Level 2 ($36.50 for all four), and $134.50 per exchange for professional real-time data. Distributors may charge more.

Am I a professional trader on a funded account?

Not automatically. Simulated funded accounts are normally traded under a non-professional declaration. Classification depends on CME's definition - registration, advisory work and managing money for a business - and on live funded accounts, on the firm's own terms.

Are data fees pro-rated if I cancel mid-month?

No. CME exchange data is billed by calendar month, so a subscription switched on for one day costs the full month.
